Green screen means filming in front of a bright green backdrop that is removed in post-production and replaced with any image or animation.
Why green specifically?
Bright green rarely occurs naturally in skin tones and is seldom part of clothing or props. This means the risk of a subject “disappearing” into the background is minimal.
There is also a technical advantage: in digital video compression using the 4:2:2 format, the green channel retains full information while red and blue are reduced by 50 percent. This makes it easier to cut out the subject with high precision in post-production.
Green screen vs. chroma key
Chroma key is the technical method of removing a specific colour from an image or video. Green screen is the most common application of chroma key — but the technique works with any solid-colour backdrop, such as blue (blue screen).
The terms are often used interchangeably in everyday speech, but chroma key is the broader, technical term.
When should you use green screen?
Green screen gives maximum creative freedom in post-production. You can place your subjects in any environment — from a conference room in New York to an animated universe — without travelling there or building an expensive set.
It works particularly well for:
- Corporate and commercial film where you want full control over the background
- Educational film with graphics, diagrams or animations added in post
- Virtual backgrounds for live broadcasts and livestreams
- Product presentations against a neutral or brand-aligned background
When should you NOT use green screen?
Green screen is not always the right choice. There are situations where it creates more problems than it solves:
- When the environment is part of the story. If you are filming in a specific city, at a workplace or in a real setting — and that context matters to the viewer — it is better to film on location.
- Complex reflections and transparency. Glass, mirrors, water and semi-transparent materials are difficult to handle with green screen because they partially reflect the background colour.
- Shadows on the backdrop. Shadows falling on the green screen are technically complicated to handle and require extra lighting work.
- Subjects with strong green elements. A green shirt, plants in the foreground or other green props can disappear into the background.
What makes a good green screen studio?
The quality of the final result depends largely on the studio’s equipment and expertise. A professional green screen studio should have:
- Evenly lit backdrop without shadows or colour inconsistencies
- Separate lighting for subject and backdrop to avoid green spill on the subject
- Sufficient distance between subject and backdrop — at least 2–3 metres to avoid light spill
- Sound-absorbing material if the studio is also used for spoken word or voice-over
- The right size for the intended subject — a helicopter needs more space than a speaking person
Multiproduktion’s film studio in Stockholm meets all these requirements and is equipped for everything from simple interviews to more complex productions.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the background green and not another colour?
Green is the colour least common in human skin tones and normal clothing, which makes it easier for software to separate the person from the background without clipping parts of the skin. Blue backgrounds (bluescreen) are sometimes used in film production, but green works better in digital light and requires less intense lighting to produce a clean result.

Studio, lighting and camera are included in the rental. You need to bring clothing that is NOT green or dark green — these will be keyed out along with the background. Also avoid reflective materials. We always send a production brief in advance with all practical details.
Does green screen work for livestreaming and live broadcasts?
